Nurturing plants at home has many positive effects on people. Research shows how indoor plants help heal a person’s illness. These plants also absorb harmful gasses like carbon dioxide and other chemicals and release oxygen. But the effects of plants differ when it comes to dogs. As soothing plants are to humans, some are toxic and harmful to pets. Here are six plants to keep away from your pets at home.

Amaryllis
Dogs can suffer from symptoms like vomiting, reduced appetite, diarrhea, and abdominal pain if they ingest parts of the amaryllis plant. The plant contains lycorine which is proven to be toxic to dogs. The intensity of symptoms can worsen if your pet eats the bulb of the flowers and stalks. The bulb is concentrated with toxins and hence triggers such symptoms.

Hyacinth
Hyacinths are beautiful flowering plants that bloom in white, pink, purple, red, and blue shades. But dogs may be at risk of several health conditions if they ingest the plant, especially its bulb. Hyacinths are abundant in calcium oxalate crystals. The crystals may result in symptoms like drooling, diarrhea, and vomiting.

Eucalyptus
The leaves of the eucalyptus plant help relieve severe cold symptoms. But the plant contains eucalyptol, a substance that is toxic to dogs. If your pet eats the leaves of the eucalyptus plant, they may develop symptoms such as excessive drooling, depression, weakness, and vomiting.

Bluebells
The bulbs and leaves of bluebells contain chemicals known as scillarens. The chemical is known to induce symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting. Dogs may also develop symptoms like lethargy and disorientation when they eat parts of the bluebell plant. Furthermore, the sap from the plant can cause skin irritation and dermatitis in pets.

Daffodils
Though a popular flowering plant, daffodils can also be extremely dangerous to pets. The flowers and leaves of the plant are known for their alkaloid content. If your pet accidentally eats parts of the plant, they may be subject to complications like an upset stomach or vomiting. In severe cases, the alkaloid may trigger fits in your pet. The water where you place the daffodil may also be toxic, so it’s advisable to steer clear of nurturing the plant at home.

Hydrangea
Hydrangeas are brightly-colored flowering plants that are pleasing to look at when you wake up. But the plant is not as pleasing to dogs. Eating the plant can cause disturbances in the pet’s gastrointestinal tract. Dogs may even lose their appetite and undergo depression when they munch on hydrangeas. And it is all the result of a component called cyanogenic glycoside.

Medication for ticks and fleas
Plants are not the only factor that can affect your dog. Infestations from pests may also lead to health conditions like excessive itching and diseases like Lyme disease. Luckily there are treatments to deal with such problems. One such flea medicine for dogs is Simparica TRIO. Simparica is a chewable tablet for dogs and is an FDA-approved treatment that must be taken once a month. The tick medication for dogs protects them against heartworm disease, roundworms, hookworms, ticks, and fleas. Simparica TRIO is safe for puppies as young as eight weeks and weighs about 2.8 lbs.
